Multiplying Decimals – Count the Places
Ex: 0.3 × 0.04
1st : Ignore the decimals and multiply as whole numbers. 2nd : Count total decimal places in the numbers you multiplied.
3rd : Place the decimal in the product so that it has 3 decimal places. Tip: The answer always has the same total number of decimal places as the numbers you multiplied.
2. Dividing Decimals – Shift the Point
Rule: Make the divisor a whole number first.
Ex: 1.2 ÷ 0.3
1st : Shift the decimal point in the divisor to make it a whole number. 2nd : Shift the decimal point in the dividend the same number of places. 3rd : Divide as usual. Tip: Always shift the dividend and divisor the same number of places to make the divisor whole.
